Christian Aid Walk to the River Jordan 2012
The walk has taken place almost every year since 1980, and has followed
essentially the same route, passing through some of the most attractive
countryside in Dorset. It starts out beside the River Frome, flowing
past Kingston Maurward, continues through the bluebell woods and
watercress beds near West Knighton, and on to lunch in the Methodist
Church Hall in Broadmayne. After lunch, the walk ascends the Ridgeway,
with a fine view of the coast, then descends past the White Horse, and
follows the cliffs towards the River Jordan, which, enters the sea at
Bowleaze, where we have tea. We then return, climbing the Ridgeway from
Sutton Poyntz. The journey homeward then takes us past Came Wood, and
Culliford Tree, past Cripton Barn and Winterborne Came and so back to
Dorchester.
The main points for joining and leaving the walk, in addition to
Dorchester, are Broadmayne and Bowleaze, both accessible by bus. The
official distance is some 18 miles, and these locations divide the walk
into approximately six mile lengths.
You would be most welcome to join us for all, or part of this year’s
walk, and, by gift, or sponsorship, support Christian Aid. Come along
to North Square at 9:30 on Saturday May 19th with your packed lunch,
and walking gear, to enjoy a day out in the spring countryside in
convivial company! However, please remember that you are the person
responsible for your own safety, and for that of the members of your
party. Children must be accompanied by their parents, or by a
responsible adult.
