In this month's edition of the Parish Magazine....
Support our local shops
The dwindling number of locally-owned shops and businesses
in Dorchester is lamented in this month's edition. Locally-owned shops
display posters and sell tickets for community and charity events, and advertise
in local parish magazines. National branded chains do not allow their
managers to do this. The moral, according to editor Mike Morgan, is to
support these local businesses before it is too late.
A Spiritual thirst
There is a growing interest in religion reflecting an increasing
spiritual thirst in this country, according to Revd Philip Lambert. In his farewell
letter in the Dorchester Parish Magazine, he says that the challenge for the church
is to be open to this need and fulfil the ancient calling of the Church of England
to care for all whether or not they share our faith. Philip leaves in August to take
up a new post at Truro Cathedral.

Service of Remembrance
St George's Church, Dorchester is holding a service of remembrance for families who
have lost a baby or young child. It will be at 3.00pm on Sunday 16 July. Those interested
in attending should contact Revd Richard Betts (262394) for further details.
Art Show success
The Art Exhibition held at St Peter's Church as part of the John White 400 celebrations attracted
over 300 people and raised £1,220 for local charities. Organiser John Herring said, 'This was a
great result considering the town was quiet at the time with people enjoying the sun on the beach
or watching the football. The artists are very pleased and are asking when we are going to have
another one'. The show included 200 paintings and a demonstration by renowned water-colour painter
Bill Toop. [More details from Mike Morgan]
The Parish Magazine is available from the town's Anglican churches, or
from the Tourist Information Office or WH Smith.
