In this month's edition of the Parish Magazine....

Reasons to be cheerful

In the gloom surrounding the economy, not to mention the weather, this month's Dorchester Parish Magazine is determinedly cheerful. All the stories featured on the cover are positive ones:

A Happy Occasion celebrates the ordination last month of two local women, Jean Saddington and Joanna Lacy Smith, as deacons who will serve as un-paid ministers in the Parish (page 8)

Readers can Have a Good Time at the Charity Ball on 21 December at Kingston Maurward organised by Richard and Claire Budd to raise money to build a secopndary school in the Nuba Mourtains of Sudan (page 4)

Say something nice. Inspired by an email chain currently in circulation, editor Mike Morgan urges readers to stop grumbling over little things and find something nice about their clergy and other church workers (page 25)

Always look on the bright side of life. Steve Kinnersly recommends websites to cheer you up, including some Christian jokes (page 21)

Laugh out loud at Allen Knott's latest book of verse, illustrated by John Herring, in aid of the Weldmar Hospice.

Shine a light into the darkness: the annual Christingle Services in aid of the Children's Society will take place on Sunday 7 December, 10.30 am at St Peter's and 4.30pm at St George's

There is such a thing as a free lunch. Keys: a new opportunity for town centre workers and shoppers to sit and eat their lunch without spending money in cafes or bars will be launched at St Peter's Church on Thursdays in December. if successful it is planned to extend it to other weekdays. (Page 28)

If this cheerfulness is too much for you, we also cover war memorials, heresy, climate change, wild cats and the ailments of tortoises, but you'll have to look for those articles yourself.

The Parish Magazine is available from the town's Anglican churches, the Tourist Information Office or WH Smith.
