LEAKING THE SPIRIT Today we celebrate the great events of the first Pentecost or Whit Sunday when the Holy Spirit descended on the assembled apostles in wind and flame and empowered them for ministry. DL Moody, the great American evangelist was once asked the question, ‘Have you been filled with the Holy Spirit?’ ‘Yes,’ he replied but I leak!’ There are two points to be drawn out of this story. The first is that when we are filled with the Spirit, it’s not given to us to keep but to share. We can call it overflowing or ‘leaking’ but ‘leaking’ is a better picture because it reminds us – the second point – that we need frequent top-ups. The gift of the Spirit is not only given once in a lifetime: we need continuous renewal. Greek scholars tell us that Paul’s instruction to the Ephesians (5:18) to ‘be filled with the Spirit’ should more literally be translated as ‘Go on and on being filled with the Spirit.’ Whitsun is a good time to seek a refilling and this year is particularly special for Rich and me because we shall be celebrating with the community on Iona. We are travelling with other Readers from our previous diocese of Hereford and with our former Warden who tells us that “Iona is a very special place, where the veil between heaven and earth is very thin;” We look forward to a special blessing of the Spirit so be prepared for ‘leakage’ when we return!!

Saturday 24th June Summer Barbecue at 6.30pm at the Manor House. Cost of Barbecue is £6 or for 6-16 year olds £3, payable on the day.
