St. George's Notes

St. George’s Sunday School

Our Sunday School is well established and meets during term time in St. George’s church hall, which is behind the church and with car parking space. The children have their own time with the teachers then join us in church at the end of the morning service to share with us what they have been doing. Occasionally, the children stay in church for the whole service, such as Mothering Sunday, Easter, Harvest and Christmas. Our teachers are very experienced and they meet together regularly to plan and to review.

St George's Dragons (Sunday school) Won 1st Prize in Dorchester Carnival 2011,  they have worked for weeks cutting pasting building and painting. Happily  their efforts have been rewarded. All were prepared for defeat as this is the third year in a row they have been successful but, joy upon joy, a mighty cheer was raised for the Dragon and St George, otherwise known as Stuart Montgomery who did us proud,  a finer St George would have been hard to find.  Thanks to our Sunday School Teachers, who have managed, week after week, to relate the work to a bible story, no mean feat. Well done children, large and small, you are a group of young people to be proud of, happy together, polite and kind, and a pleasure to spend time with.

Manor Park School Lunch Club

The team vicar of St. George’s is an ex officio governor at Manor Park First School. Through that link and with the support of the school, we run two lunch clubs in school, the first for years 1 and 2, the other for year 3. We teach bible stories, do activities and chat together with the children as they eat their packed lunches! Parents are kept regularly informed of dates and other detail. As at June 2009 there are 18 children in each of the groups. We have 5 adults to run each group.

Related to these groups is the termly family service and shared Sunday tea in St. George’s hall, specially for first school children and their families. This service is run jointly by our three town churches – St. George’s, St. Peter’s and St. Mary’s.

Toddler Group

St. George’s and St. Peter’s combine to run a group for parents and toddlers in St. George’s church hall, behind the church. The group meets from 1.30 to 3.15pm on Fridays. We meet in term time and also during school holidays. The group serves a social purpose, a drop in place for people in our local community. There is no directly religious purpose though we hope our hospitality makes everyone feel welcome. We charge a very modest amount but there are concessions so no one is turned away. There is a good link with our local Children’s Centres with their representatives calling in and supporting us on a regular basis.

St Georges Events Committee

Our Events Committee work thoughout the year organising various events to raise much needed funds for the church.

Our main event of the year is St George's Day Fair. This has been held for over 50 years on Fordington Green and in the church on the nearest Saturday to our Patron Saint's anniversary and, this year, is on the 21st April from 1.30 to 4pm. Details of this year's attractions, stalls etc will be advertised in due course.

Later in the year we will be organising a Barbeque, a Table Top Sale and a Bingo Evening.

In December we hold a  Christmas Tree Festival in the church, which opens on the 1st Friday in December immediately after Carols on Fordington Green and finishes on the Sunday afternoon with the Christingle Service.

Further details of all these events will be advertised on this website in Pews News Supplement, and in the Parish Diary.
