3 - The Appeal, and the Re-Opening of the Church

About £1,000 was needed. The Committee decided to raise it by subscription rather than levying a rate. A Restoration Appeal was launched in 1854.

Money did not come easily. Of the £1,000 needed, only about £400 had been raised by 1854. Because of the shortage of money, the refurbishment could not proceed to completion. After the rebuilding of the East end, the other works were done as and when funds became available. Nevertheless, the restoration and reopening of the church was celebrated by a special service on Thursday 10 July 1856 (click on image for the transcribed text).
