The minister shall use neither albe, vestment not cope: but being a
bishop, he shall have and wear a rochet: and being a priest, he shall
have and wear a surplice onlie. So says the 1559 Book of Common Prayer
whose service of Evensong was celebrated at St Peter's Church by the
Bishop of Sherborne (wearing the rochet with wide sleeves tied at the
wrists) and Revd Dru Dennis (wearing a surplice onlie). The service was
to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Revd John White, who is buried
in the porch below them, as explained in the diamond shaped plaque on
the wall. Also in the photo is the floral display designed by Sara
Beauchamp to depict White's times and the expedition he organised to
colonise the Massachussets Bay area.
The service was sung by the Petertide Choir conducted David Beeby,
organist Sean Tucker, with music by Thomas Weelkes, William Byrd and
William Mundy.
