Dorchester and Weymouth Theology GroupSix
or seven years ago I arranged what I thought would be a one off
discussion about a naughty man called Arius who decided back in the dim
and distant past that, as Jesus could not be both human and God, he was
not God. Fifteen or so turned up and we sat in a circle for a
particularly animated discussion. I shall not mention the names of
those who remained unpersuaded that Arius was wrong.
Since
then there have been meetings four times a year. The format has moved
towards lectures or talks followed by questions. Local talent has
competed with diocesan talent. Among the former have been Geoff Turnock
on medical ethics, Jean Lang for a most engaging presentation on that
potentially unengaging theme of the Thirty Nine Articles of the C of E,
and Harold Stephens with a look at the Book of Revelation (which
records the fate of Arius). From further afield we have welcomed, among
others, Jane Charman from Church House, Jane Lloyd as a hospital
chaplain, Archdeacon Paul Taylor and June Osborne, Dean of Salisbury.
So
why on earth have we decided to have some of our meetings in Weymouth? It
all began with a conversation I had with Richard Franklin on a nice
summer’s day last year in Salisbury. They had a group and we had a
group. Why not merge? There were no good reasons not to. As far as I’m
aware there are not too many Arians - in the theological sense of the
word - among the Weymouth contingent. Besides, Richard has given two of
the presentations in Dorchester these past three years.
